"To be both visionary and accurate, true to physics and metaphysics at the same time, is rare and puts the poet in some rarefied company. Black, like a few other younger poets, is willing to include all the traditional effects of the lyric poem in his work, but he has set them going in new and lively ways, with the confidence of virtuosity and a belief in the ancient pleasures of pattern and repetition."—Mark Jarman, American Poet

Lush and daring, Malachi Black's poems in Storm Toward Morning press all points along the spectrum of human positions, from sickness, isolation, and insomniac disarray to serenity, wonder, and spiritual yearning. Pulsing at the intersections of "eye and I," body and mind, physical and metaphysical, Black brings distinctive voice, vision, and music to matters of universal mortal concern.

Storm Toward Morning Malachi Black 9781556594724 Books Reviews

If a single description were applied to Malachi Black’s poetry, that description might be “elemental.” Throughout his work are the images of waves, light, and blood; frost, darkness, and sap; the earth, the sun, and the moon. His writing is defined, each poem creating a distinct moment for a reader to consider, but also ambiguous, as themes, words, and even the patterns of the poems themselves spill between pages and bleed together. Like looking at a forest through a mist, his words shift and re-shift, coming in and out of focus, constantly sharpening and softening their edges.

In this poetic haze, it is possible for the reader to get lost. There is something inherently dark and unsettled in Black’s work. This is not beach-reading for warm and lazy days along the white sands of Mexico; this is reading for the stormy nights of Maine, when the falling snow is spun together with the shore-driven waves. While Black’s writing may be termed poignant, it not necessarily uplifting. His poems pay a fair homage to the melancholic and weary, but largely look past what is good and hopeful in the world. Wordsworth, this is not. But then, neither was Dickinson.

If you are hoping to find something to pass the time while waiting at the dentist’s office, you might want to keep looking. But if you are looking for artistic, expressionistic poetry, Malachi Black will satisfy. The imagery of his words may be turbulent and harsh at times, but they are so effectively, speaking to part of the human condition part of all of us can relate to.
I was absolutely captivated by Malachi Black’s poetry in Storm Toward Morning. One of the first things I noticed about Black’s poetry was his amazingly rhythmic style that just sort of sweeps you up. Most of his poems are connected word by word through sound or meaning or repetition. You just get lost in the flow of the poetry. He masterfully uses punctuation throughout his poetry, often doing things such as connecting his lines by a careful colon, signifying an intimate, yet subordinate relationship between the words. In a similar way, he selectively employs capitalization. This is especially exhibited in his poem, “Rain.” Written in all lowercase, he creates a sense of equality among the words, as well as softness throughout the lines. A common theme of his work seems to be insomnia, and his poems truly capture the anxiety and frustration of sleeplessness. In this way, as you read, you can feel the haziness of his poems, meant to pull you through this lost feeling of insomnia. My favorite section of Storm Toward Morning was “Finis” or part III. I was constantly on my toes as Malachi’s poetry continually moved between forms. From short and poignant, to a prose-like flow, Malachi keeps things fresh and intriguing. He carefully uses the white space on his pages to enhance the poetic experience, taking you on a journey as you read. This can be especially seen in the final poem of his collection, “Prayer for a Slow Death.” As you read, you feel as though you are taking slow steps downward through his words. I truly enjoyed Malachi’s Storm Toward Morning. It was potent. It was beautiful.
I bought this book at Malvern Books on 29th street in Austin, Texas.

His apparent ease with language spreads on the page so eloquently that you don’t even notice how masterful it is. When you read him, you don’t understand at first you’re being taken on a ride across his soul, which somehow becomes your own, and before you know it, you’re questioning your own existence and demanding answers to questions you hadn’t even known you wanted answers to. He asked them for you, and now you want the answers, and by god be damned, you’ll have to figure them out on your own. I like that, when a writer does that to me. It is rare indeed.

Beer Songs for the Lonely
Malachi Black single-handedly won me back over to an appreciation for the classical forms of poetry. I don’t even really notice that he is using them because his language never feels wrapped around the structure of the sonnet. When I read his work, I feel like I am reading sonnets for the first time, and yet am never fully conscious of the sonnet form. It is both sleek and sly how he spoon feeds you the medicine of old structure and makes it taste so new.
Mark Jarman’s review of the book hits the nail on the head when he says “to be both visionary and accurate, true to physics and metaphysics, at the same time, is rare and puts the poet in some rarefied company.”
This book is just the right length and each poem is just short enough that I feel I am able to invest in each one without feeling like I am trying to grasp too much and without feeling daunted by the task. Black keeps his poetry simple, seeming to favor the inherent depth of words without relying on bloating his work with filler. His poems are expertly pared down yet still feel meaty and substantial.
Black also plays with his words. Sometimes he turns them around and seems to look at them from different angles before placing them down for the final time in a poem and moving on to new ones. It helps me as reader to appreciate the simple beauty of words and their meaning.
