This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

This is a sequel to Ishmael, or In The Depths (which was one of the best books I have ever read). Self-Raised is also excellent. You have to read Ishmael first as this is a continuation of the story. Both books were excellent and I could not put them down. The main character is a man of integrity, honor, and kindness. There is love, mystery, suspense, everything you could want. Very fast-paced book. I had never heard of Emma Southworth before stumbling upon her at Amazon and now I plan to read all of her books. Great author.

Selfraised or From the depths Emma Dorothy Eliza Nevitte Southworth Books Reviews

I think I'd rate it zero if I wasn't so hard after wanting to know what happens to the characters. The first novel in this series had a whole mess of racial slurs also ( being a product of the era she was in as well as the era she was writing about) but the first story had a compelling, captivating way about it. You simply wanted to know what would happen to practically everyone she introduced.

The reasons I rate it so poorly

-the slurs (as already mentioned) are just stomach twisting to me, it goes on and on and I found it repulsive, I realize it developed the fact that the villain was wretched through and through but it just was pounding on and on. Not just with the slurs but speaking of the servants as though they were less than animals. I tend to avoid things that offend me. That's why I'm harping on about this, so you don't go in thinking;' Oh, maybe she's a head case and it's not sooo bad'. It is, it really is.

-the accents of the irish and the servants were UNBEARABLE to read through. I could hardly get at what they were saying and often skipped huge chunks of dialogue hoping that what was going on would be clear by the reactions of the non-accented characters.

-it turned into a murder mystery/thriller for such a long while I kept asking myself 'Why, with so many reasons NOT to read on, are you still going??!'

-the murder mystery stuff went on fooooorever and the galavanting around from place to place bored me to tears.

I gave it two stars because I really enjoyed the saintliness of Ishmael. I wanted to hear how his family and friends ended up.

[The first book is quite sweet and though it's far fetched (too fairy tale like with the villains and saints) it wasn't wretched with awful junk like todays stories are. I liked how sweetly faith in God was naturally woven into the story, for me, it never felt forced.]

If you like poetry introducing your chapters, you will enjoy the poems likely.

Since this book is free, I decided to finish it. Had it not been so, I would have returned it or burned it. Yes, I found it that offensive and annoying.

All that said, I think a FANTASTIC editor could make one of the best romantic movies of all time out of this two part sega.
This is really "part 2" of Ishmael. Even if you don't read ismael this is a great book on its own. Get it, read it to your kids, it will inspire you to live a life of integrity. Very strong Christian themes of faith, sacrifice, purity and righteousness. I hope you enjoy it.
This book is a sequel to Ishmael, written by the same author so Ishmael must be read before Self-Raised. These two books exalt character and substance in ways I haven't seen in more contemporary literature. I read these two books to my family, before bed, or after dinner. We have four children, 2 boys and 2 girls ages 17,15, boys, 13, 11 girls. They enjoyed these books immensely and we're taught valuable life lessons as we read them.
Sequel to Ishmael. Be sure to read that one first. Both books are fantastic. I highly recommend these books about about a man of great character.
Note, this is the second part of a book called "Ishmael In the Depths." It' by far the best book I've ever read (both combined). It is quite long, but worth the read. This book is rife with strong moral character, has action, suspense, yet it doesn't dilute God's providence for the actions like so many books today. I would encourage everyone to read this book. But know, this the second part and you have to read the first book to get the back story and know what's going on.
Both books, Ishmael Or, In the Depth and Self Raised or From the Depths are incredible books. I highly recommend them both. You must read them in order as book 2 starts right where book 1 finished. Going back in time and watching the life that Ishmael lived and how he rebounded to be the person that he became. They are both long books but again they are very well worth the read. They were FREE on kindle.
Really, Really interesting book. An old -fashioned Christian book where the hero is an upright person if integrity and actually reads his Bible and has devotions. A book where good triumphs over evil with many interesting twists of the plot. I could hardly put it down till I was done. You will never forget this book if you read it. Highly recommend this sequel to her other book, Ishmael. You should read that one first.
